 March 2012 Chapter Event

Topic:  Airtightening Homes & Buildings

When:  March 2, 2012 - 2pm
Where:  Envision Center, Erlanger KY

Most homes and many smaller buildings have thermal energy use and interior comfort problems dominated by air leakage.  Outdoor winds are higher-speed and air is dryer in winter.  Summer air is often very humid even when not hot.  So reducing unwanted air-leakage works year-round to lower thermal energy use and improve occupant comfort.

AEE member, energy consultant, designer and instructor John F Robbins CEM / CSDP begins this program with a presentation on airleaks, including where they usually occur, how to minimize them, how to test airtightness, what airtightness standards are in codes and various energy programs, also how to calculate effects of air-leakage in thermal energy use and HVAC capacity sizing.

Two home energy professionals present a blower door and how it is used for airtightness testing.  David Horton of "Horton Brothers" is a BPI-Certified "Building Analyst" and "Residential Building Envelope Whole House Air Leakage Control Installer", HERS Rater, LEED Green Rater and LEED-AP For Homes.  Julie Tolliver of "Energy Fitness for Homes" is BPI-Certified "Building Analyst" and  "Residential Building Envelope Whole House Air Leakage Control Installer."  They demonstrate props used in air-sealing training, using a test bench with a fan to draw air through various props, including a rim joist, can light, pipe penetration, etc.  Initial leaks are located by smoke test, then appropriate air sealing materials are used to seal each prop before retesting to show how air leakage is reduced or stopped.
